Man in jail

The Somali government has repatriated 15 of its nationals who were jailed in Zimbabwe in November last year following talks with the South African nation.

The ministry of information said in a statement issued on Thursday evening that Somalia Ambassador to South Africa and the Non-Resident Ambassador to Zimbabwe Jamal Mohamed Barrow held talks with Zimbabwean government officials that secured the prisoners’ release.

“Seven other citizens are expected to be repatriated within a week,” said the ministry. The 15 were being held up in remand prison in Harare.

Barrow thanked the benefactors of the Indian Muslims living in Zimbabwe who paid the return tickets for those Somalis who spent eight months in prison.

The 15 Somalis were rounded up in November 2017 by the Zimbabwean security services who considered them illegal immigrants. Enditem
