“Journalism encourages development, realizing national vision, boosting the good governance and helps produce and keep the unity of the nation,” Khaire said during the re-launch late on Tuesday.

He said he was delighted that the Somali National University has resumed its free services to the Somali people by educating thousands of Somali youth and producing graduates that are the leaders of tomorrow.

“The National University has registered up to one thousands and five hundred students so far. Though that is a new beginning, yet it is nowhere near the old days when the university was the main producer of Somalia’s graduates in their thousands,” Khaire said.

He expressed hopes graduates will provide “healthy reporting” about the Horn of Africa nation which has been wrecked by fighting.

The PM said journalists are required to be truthful and to base their work on facts, even if their reporting is not beneficial to the country.

Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Abdirahman Omar Osman said his ministry will take its role in ensuring the faculty fulfills its mandate.

“We were the main employers of the graduates from the faculty and we will continue to do so. Scholars at the ministry will contribute to the provision and sharing knowledge to the faculty,” Osman said.

He said relaunching of the faculty of Journalism and Communication comes at a time that Somali cabinet has approved a reviewed media law which will soon be placed before Parliament and Somali Media Strategy has been developed.

“This relaunch of the faculty will take a greater share of development of Somalia Media. This will in turn be an important tool to assist the good governance, accountability and the overall check and balance for Somalia,” he said. Enditem
