A ban on social media is “impossible,” the prime minister of Vietnam, whose government has been criticized for targeting political bloggers and online activists, said Thursday.

“All the people at this meeting join social networks,” Nguyen Tan Dung said at a gathering at Government Office, according to a report on state-run Vietnam Television. “… We do not prevent it. It is impossible to ban.”

Sporadic access to social media sites like Facebook has prompted speculation over whether it is officially blocked; however, the government has not confirmed this.

Vietnam has 30 million Facebook users. The site is popular with businesses as well as activist groups at a time when the government has been cracking down on its online critics.

Vietnam had an estimated 150 to 200 political prisoners, according to Human Rights Watch. The government said it only jails people who break the law.
