Journalists can compete for the Embratel Journalism Awards in Brazil.

The Brazilian telecommunications company Embratel sponsors the annual awards, organized by the Syndicate of Professional Journalists of Rio de Janeiro, among others.

The awards, which wil distribute a total of BR$194,000 (about US$100,000), aim to promote news reporting on national topics that contribute to social inclusion and sustainable development.

There are 12 categories of national journalism prizes, plus regional prizes for the best reports from the North, Northeast, Southeast and South of the country. The jury will also select the best work among all participants for the Barbosa Lima Sobrinho trophy, which comes with BR$32,000 (about US$16,000).

Works must have been published or broadcast in Brazil between June 2011 and November 2012.

The deadline to enter is January 21. This year the application process will be entirely online.
