SMEGA, a Non-Governmental Organisation focused on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) has organised a training workshop for self-employed businesses on effective packaging and labelling of their products.

About 100 artisans in dressmaking and other production businesses were taken through how to use the internet to promote their businesses, effective packaging and branding and best practices in branding and packaging to position their businesses on the domestic and global markets.

The training programme in Koforidua, organised in conjunction with Vodafone Ghana, Activa Insurance, Heritage Bank and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI) is the fifth in series after Tamale, Kumasi, Takoradi and Accra.

Mr Kwasi Ofori, Project lead, SMEGA, said the objective of the training project was to support people in the informal and production sectors to improve on their businesses by practising good packaging and labelling to attract buyers.

He noted that most of the Ghanaian products especially from the SMEs were poorly packaged and labelled and not attractive to stay in any competition on both the local and international market and added that “packaging of products is critical to the Ghana beyond aid”.

According to Mr Ofori, the project was the brain child of SMEGA whose focus was on finding access market and investment for SMEs with a flagship programe being the SMEGA awards with funding from 10 per cent pay cut of its staff and support from other institutions.

Ms Maame Efua Essel, High Value Customer Sales Manager of Vodafone, said technology application was relevant in growing businesses hence their involvement in the project to train self-employed business operators on how to use the various social media platforms to build their businesses.

She said with the advancement in the use of mobile phones, they were helping mobile phone users without businesses to take advantage of the rippling benefits of the mobile phones not only to chat and talk but to grow their businesses as well.
