Traditional leaders in Ghana’s Upper West Region have appealed to Deputy Minister-designate for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation Mohammed Adams Sukparu to prioritize bridging the digital divide in their communities.

The Pulima Traditional Council emphasized that enhanced connectivity is crucial for development in the remote Sissala West District once Sukparu’s parliamentary approval is secured.

In a congratulatory message dated 21 July 2025, Kuoro Osman Deiwia Nankpa III, President of the Council, highlighted persistent communication challenges facing the area. He noted many communities suffer from poor mobile network coverage, unreliable internet, and digital exclusion that hinder economic and educational progress.

The Council directly linked connectivity gaps to constrained opportunities. Farmers reportedly struggle to access real-time market information, students face limitations in online learning, and healthcare providers encounter difficulties coordinating emergency services due to inadequate network infrastructure. These limitations, the chiefs stated, restrict residents from engaging fully with digital economic and educational platforms.

Kuoro Nankpa III stressed the transformative potential of improved services, stating: “Our young people are eager to embrace technology, start online businesses, access digital education, and connect with opportunities beyond our traditional boundaries.” The traditional leaders expressed confidence that Sukparu’s expertise could effectively address the longstanding issues of digital exclusion in Sissala West.

The appeal frames digital infrastructure as foundational to unlocking local potential. The Council concluded that resolving these connectivity challenges would significantly contribute to both community development and national growth objectives under the Mahama administration’s digital transformation agenda.
