Singaporean police will begin wearing body cameras starting with one neighbourhood police centre this week, a media report said Thursday.

The cameras, worn on the front of uniforms, will be on and recording while police officers carry out their duties.

“The body-worn camera will facilitate police investigations and the gathering of evidence,” The Straits Times quoted deputy commissioner of police operations Lau Peet Meng as saying.

“It will complement existing forensic methods to allow the police to piece together what actually happened at an incident,” he said.

Officers will be able to switch off the cameras in certain situations, such as when they are dealing with victims of sexual assault.

The use of the cameras will begin in one area on Friday and all 35 neighbourhood police centres will be using body cameras by June next year, the report said.
