The minister for Environment, Science and Technology Hon Sherry Aryitey is now in the grips of concerned citizens of Kenyasi 1, Kenyasi 2 and Ntotoroso all of Asutifi North and South District for grandly machinating what they describe as a fraudulent disbursement of GH¢ 70 million compensation paid by Newmont Ghana Gold Ltd as a result of the 3-year ago accidental spillage of cyanide, through their operations which as a result affected the already stated communities.

According to the heartily wounded residents at a just ended demonstration over this in-actions, Hon Sherry Aryitey without any explanation arrived at a mathematical formula for the disbursement of the money, that each affected communities is to receive 45%, equaling GH¢ 31 million according to her calculation.

Peeping through the GH¢ 31 million arrived at by the Hon minister with mathematical brains, residents underscored that, working by 45% on the GH¢70 million amount, the compensated amount for each affected community should stand at GH¢ 31.5 million.
Residents have therefore defined this arithmetic approach by the hon. minister as a deliberate attempt to hide the remaining balance of GH 1.5 million.

Hon Sherry Aryitey has also been slapped with an allegation for keeping the said compensation quantum in an undisclosed account known only by her. Questions now raised are where the money was lodged and the state of the amount of interest yielded.
Speaking to our reporters, the leader of demonstrators who took to the streets amidst chantings, Mr. Oman Kofi Adusei described the latter decision by the two parties as unreasonable and lacks the appreciation of the people in the community.
“Apart from the fact that the Health center has a limitation as to the cases it can handle, the place is always choked without patients some of whom go home without treatment. There is an existing market center at Kenyase with stalls that are not used which have become sleeping rooms for some residents.,” he indicated, adding that several admonitions to the DCE by Nananom and members of the community have been met with arrogance and unnecessary bravado that so long as he remains the DCE, nothing can change his mind since he takes instructions from above and not from the residents who don’t matter.

Mr. Oman Kofi Adusei has therefore advised the District Chief Executive and the Hon minister to rethink about their decision else any attempt to construct the market will be resisted by the masses.
