Two goals from captain Alassan Sylla and Moussa Kone was enough for Senegal to pick a late win over Qatar in the U-20 FIFA World Cup in New Zealand.
SenThe Qataris who needed a win at all cost to book a third best-place took the lead in the 17th minute from Afif’s spot kick after Almoez Ali had been fouled in the box.
But the Asian champions had to breathe a sigh in two minutes after when Alassane Sow’s goal from a resulting Mamadou Thiam’s backheel was disallowed by the linesman.
Senegal’s goalie, Ibrahima Sy was caught in the mess when a long searching ball from the Qatari keeper bounce to beat him outside his goal area but he managed to save the situation at least.
Captain Alassan Sylla was blessed with a poor clearance in the 76th minute and he expertly put the ball in the net. Five minutes after, Moussa Kone extended the lead for Senegal.
The result meant that Columbia and host New Zealand automatically booked their place to the last 16 whilst Senegal hope to qualify as one of the third best-placed teams.
