Top of their concerns was that Obama was coming into the country, meeting everyone else including the Executive, but skipping the August House.

?I would have expected him to address a joint session of Parliament. Parliament is quickly losing its standing as a democratic institution because of the tyranny of numbers. It is a wakeup call. Obama is meeting the civil society as a group, he?s meeting the Executive, and I am sure elements of the Judiciary will also be met, but Parliament has been left out,? said Siaya Senator James Orengo.

Mr Orengo said Siaya residents are disappointed because the itinerary shows Obama will not go to K?Ogelo village.

?We are a little disappointed, justifiably so, that he is not coming to Siaya, where he has his roots,? said Orengo.

Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki (Tharaka Nithi) said Obama is skipping Parliament because the US had its own itinerary for its President.

All Kenya did was extend an invitation for Obama to tour as many parts of Kenya as possible, Prof Kindiki said.

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, had asked the Majority Leader why Obama had decided to skip the August House in his maiden visit to the country. He wondered if the decision had anything to do with the shame of fights, inefficiency, and obsequiousness to the Executive that continue to dog both Houses of Parliament.

Senate Minority Leader Moses Wetang?ula (Bungoma) said he was thrilled that as an opposition leader, he will be in the four-member opposition brigade that will be meeting Obama. The other three are Raila Odinga, Martha Karua and Kalonzo Musyoka.

Tribalism, corruption and governance are top of the agenda, he said.

?When we talk about reforms for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission and respect for the Judiciary, it is because we want a better country. Obama is not coming here to sanitise anybody. He?s not coming to give anyone a stamp of approval,? Mr Wetang?ula said.
