The statement issued after an extraordinary cabinet meeting chaired by Kagame said Rwandans living in Diaspora will vote on December 17, 2015 while those in the country will vote on December 18.

More than 3.7 million Rwandans petitioned parliament asking lawmakers to amend an article limiting Rwanda’s president to two terms.

Parliamentarians in July voted to support a change to the constitution to allow Kagame to stand again after his second 7-year term expires in 2017.

Last October, the lawmakers passed a revised constitution amending presidential term to 5 years renewable once from the current 7 years, a change that will now be put to a referendum.

Kagame has not come out to say he is interested in running again but maintains that it is up to the Rwandan people to decide. Enditem
