Vincent Karega, Rwandan High Commissioner to South Africa, on Thursday called on Africans to adopt best practices from each other and abroad, improve trade and shun corruption.

Speaking at the inaugural Tropics business summit in Johannesburg, Karega stated that Africa is rich in natural resources, blessed with strong youthful population which needs to be put to good use.

He stated that Rwanda is now one of the fastest growing countries in the continent because they adopted good practice from the continent and abroad.

“We need to do more on our leadership and governance. We have to remove red tape or bureaucracy and have a vision shared by the governments and citizens. A lot needs to be done. We need to fill up skills gap, fight corruption and build a culture of patriotism, discipline and values of the region,” said Karega.

Rwanda experienced genocide in 1994 but turned the tide and is now one of the countries rated high in the world in competitiveness and the ease of doing business. Rwanda adopted some of the best practices from South Africa, including constitution making, reconciliation and the university management.

He said, “As the continent we have to change the culture as government, people and mind-set. We are strong as Africans and not as Rwanda, Nigeria or South Africa. We have to work together. We have to think global and act locally.”

The Tropics business summit will end on October 21, 2017. The meeting is being attended by people from different countries to find ways to collaborate and improve the continent. Enditem
