Afghanistan’s interim leadership has welcomed Russia’s decision to formally recognize it as the country’s legitimate government, marking a significant diplomatic shift.

Chief Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid described the move as opening “a new chapter” in bilateral relations during a Friday interview with Tolonews. Russia becomes the first nation to extend de jure recognition to the administration governing since August 2021.

“We are thankful to Russia for this bold decision. We welcome it,” Mujahid stated, characterizing the action as “appreciable.” He further called upon other nations to “fulfill their responsibilities in engaging and building relations with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan,” using the interim government’s preferred title. The recognition follows Russia receiving the interim government’s ambassador and raising its flag at the Afghan embassy in Moscow.

This formal acknowledgment by the Russian Federation represents the most significant international legitimacy granted to the interim authorities since they assumed control following the withdrawal of U.S.-led foreign forces nearly four years ago. The move potentially signals a shift in the international stance towards the administration, though widespread recognition remains uncertain.

The development occurs amidst ongoing international discussions regarding engagement with Afghanistan’s rulers, often centered on human rights concerns, particularly women’s rights and girls’ education, alongside counter-terrorism objectives. Russia’s decision places new focus on the diplomatic landscape surrounding the central Asian nation.
