We always thought if one country was going to build a base on the moon, it would be the USA (I mean they have their flag, already there). But at Tuesday’s Global Space Exploration conference, Russia stated its goals for moon colonization in no uncertain terms:

“We’re not talking about repeating what mankind achieved 40 years ago. We’re talking about establishing permanent bases.” said Vladimir Popovkin, head of Russian space agency Roscosmos.

Documents leaked in March outlined Russia’s “deep space mission objectives,” and while the tone of a Space Race 2012 seems more about international collaboration than competition, it’s worth noting NASA was absent from this space conference held in Washington D.C. All we ask is, whoever builds it, can we come visit?
