Jubilant Royals on cloud nine after receiving the ultimate

Defending champions University of Education, Winneba (UEW) lost the title they won in the inaugural Kyeremeh Hockey Challenge Cup at the University Of Education Park last Saturday.

Despite drawing 1-1 with the ultimate winners, Royals Hockey Club (Accra-based Ashanti players), UEW relinquished the title to the Royals on superior goals deference, after amassing five points apiece.

And for demonstrating that feat, they picked a giant trophy donated by Emmanuel Kyeremeh, President of premiership side Berekum Chelsea.

UEW Ladies, after recording six points, reigned supreme in the ladies’ category, while Wilson XI emerged winners in the juvenile event.

Fourteen teams particularly from second cycle institutions across the country participated in the second edition of the prestigious hockey fiesta.

Tournament organizer and skipper of the National Hockey side, Black Sticks Ebenezer Frimpong described the competition as a huge success, saying, “I must say this is an improvement of the maiden edition. It has achieved its purpose of bringing the youth together, and most importantly identifying talents. We are hoping to make it bigger as the years progress.”

A special prize (hockey stick and a bag) donated by Frimpong was presented to Ebenezer Mensah  for his individual brilliance.

An official from the Ghana Hockey Association Kesta Adjaho penned down some names of players who distinguished themselves.

He revealed that he will invite them to Accra for justifiers into the various national teams.
