The Portugal star took to Twitter to express his regret at kicking out at defender Edimar, while Carlo Ancelotti said he had not seen the incident clearly

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has apologised for his dismissal against Cordoba on Saturday.

With the scores deadlocked at 1-1, the Portugal star kicked out at defender Edimar after a tussle at the far post following a free kick.

Referee Alejandro Hernandez issued an immediate red card to Ronaldo ? the fourth of his career in La Liga ? and the Ballon d?Or winner took to Twitter after the game to accept he had only himself to blame for the incident.

?I apologise to everyone, and especially to Edimar, for my thoughtless actions during the game today,? he said.

Madrid went on to snatch maximum points after Gareth Bale won and converted a penalty in the dying minutes.

However, Iker Casillas revealed Ronaldo was still deeply frustrated to have left his side a potential mountain to climb as Cordoba threatened to take points from the Liga leaders.

?Cristiano is annoyed because no player wants to leave his team with 10,? he told reporters.

Carlo Ancelotti, meanwhile, refused to be draw on the incident as he had not seen it clearly.

?I didn?t see Cristiano?s action and I can?t judge it,? said the Italian.
