The Ogun State Chairman of the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, Alhaji Mugisu Akinpelu has been expelled from the body.
His suspension followed a letter signed by the National Secretary-General of the association, Comrade Yusuf Ibrahim Adeniyi.
It would be recalled that the Ogun State government had, since late last year, banned the activities of the RTEAN in the State.
In the letter with reference number RTEAN/NHQ/ADM/OG/013 and address to the former Chairman, Alhaji Mugisu Akinpelu, copy which were sent to the State government and other relevant security agencies, the Chairman was accused of gross misconduct. An investigative committee set up to look into the matter found no compensating feature to prevent the expulsion of Akinpelu.
The panel of enquiry set up by the association was headed by one Dr. Henry Ugwu Ejiofor.
The union disclosed that the action was taken after considering the petition written by the State chapter to the National Executive Committee alleging grave allegations against Akinpelu.
It would be recalled that the state chapter of the Union had, on October 17, 2014, petitioned the National President of the Association,High Chief Musa I.Shehu over the action of its Chairman.
The petition which was titled:” Petition against high level corruption, marginalization and the high handedness of the administration of Alhaji Mugisu Akinpelu of Ogun State chapter of RTEAN…The Truth of the Matter”, listed eleven acts of gross misconducts against the Akinpelu.
He was said to been involved in illegal printing of the association’s tickets and other materials for his personal enrichment and selfish gains in contravention of Article 6d (vii) of the association’s constitution.
Other charges against Akinpelu read: “You, along with your cohorts and accomplices in the South-West zone falsely/maliciously accused the National President of RTEAN to have collected a loan of N30billion from an unspecified bank with a view to destabilizing and to cause disaffection within our great association.
“That you informed the Government of Ogun State that the national leadership of RTEAN was forcing you to leave APC and join PDP to create enmity between the association and the Ogun State government, which led to the temporal stoppage of RTEAN operations in that state.
“That, in furtherance to the above, you falsely alleged to Government of Ogun State that you were given a jeep by the leadership of RTEAN as gratification or bribe to decamp from APC to PDP, an allegation which was also false, because the said jeep given to you was in your capacity as a principal officer.
“That you falsely claimed to have bought one jeep for the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), so that he will continue to co-operate with the association, a claim which is not true.
“Illegal conversion of the trailer park/garage in Ewekoro area of Ogun State meant for RTEAN for your personal use and selfish gains.
“Unscrupulously collecting the sum of N3 million from members of the RTEAN in the name of the national executive committee of the association and not remitting the money so collected to the union.”
It was also observed that Akinpelu had gone on air to assert that he remained the body?s chairman and that nobody could dissolve his cabinet.
All efforts by Daily Times to get the reaction of the embattled Chairman was unsuccessful.
