An altercation between soldiers and youths leads to rioting

Youths are reportedly rioting in Potiskum, Yobe state’s second city. The youths are angered by last week’s cattle market attack in which 60 people died.

According to an eye witness, the rioting started when a group of cattle traders gathered at the scene of the attack to pray to “God to expose those behind the killings”. Shortly after the cattle rearers started the prayers, soldiers from the Joint Task Force (JTF) arrived and the situation got out of hand.

The arrival of the soldiers at the market is said to have increased tension in the town, and some youths started burning tyres and blocking the roads in defiance of the soldiers.
