Rescue operations have continued to find bodies of four miners who died in an underground accident at Mopani Copper Mine in Kitwe city on the Copperbelt Province, the Times of Zambia reported on Friday.

minesFour miners at Mopani Copper Mines’ South Ore Body shaft died on Sunday night after falling in the underground pit when the area they were operating from caved in. They were among 94 other miners on duty, with the other 90 surviving the accident with no injuries.

Cephas Sinyangwe, the company’s head of public relations said the recovery operation has so far not yielded any success and that the rescue team has continued to search for the bodies.

“The recovery has continued through nobody has been found yet. The company is keeping the families of the deceased informed on a daily basis and will continue to render them full support during this difficult time,” he was quoted as saying by the paper.

Meanwhile, Zambian President Edgar Lungu has demanded for a full report on what caused the accident.
Inonge Wina, the country’s vice-president, said when she visited the funeral homes that Lungu has asked for a detailed report on the accident to establish what really happened to enable government come up with strategies on how to avert accidents in mines. Enditem
