Abdul Majeed Waris

French Stade Rennes are fuming with rage after their Brittany rivals Lorient completed a transfer coup by snatching Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris from under their noses.

Waris was widely reported to be closing in on a move to Rennes after earlier rejecting Lorient due to their synthetic home pitch.

But in a dramatic turn, the Ghana international was whisked into a car by officials of Lorient upon his arrival in France and signed a five-year deal with the Les Merlus to the amazement of their rivals.

Lorient is reported to have made an improved offer at the last minute to Turkish side Trabzonspor, who own his economic and registration rights.

But Stade Rennes manager Philippe Montanier has been left angered by the turn of event.

?We are disappointed. We had an agreement on the transfer by fax with Trabzonspor,? he said

?The club was ok for us to discuss with the player and he was to undergo a medical examination.

?But we had external information the next day saying that Lorient had outbid our offer and Trabzonspor agreed with the club. Trabzonspor never gave us new, which is not normal.?

Waris, who has been handed the number 9 jersey, is not new to French football having played on loan at Valenciennes last year.
