Group Flays Thisday Rating Of Ministers

The media veteran forum of Northern origin has described the recent rating of some ministers below average and poor as an abuse of the ethical practice of media profession.
The group in a statement by its Publicity Director, Usman Zainab questioned the criteria used for the rating. ?How can a newspaper just sit down with its internal editors and columnists without visiting or inquiring from Ministries what their performance are and just conclude on their performance??.
The statement reads in parts ?it is unacceptable and a gross abuse of media powers. ?Agreed that newspapers as the mouthpiece of the society have the right to investigate and report activities of government departments and ministries, but that is not to say that all their submissions and assertions can be considered to be accurate and correct.
?Take the Aviation and Interior Ministers as examples, the reforms the two Ministers have made cannot be said to be poor. But the Thisday judges in their myopic calculation rated the Interior Minister low simply because according to them he sacked the erstwhile Comptroller General of Immigration Service and delayed the confirmation of the Acting Comptroller General. When has sacking and confirmation of Comptroller Generals become the basis for performance rating? This singular conclusion has ridiculed and smeared the reputation, image and integrity of the panel of judges that rated the Ministers.
?Taking the Rose Uzoma case for instance, she erred and defied constitutional provisions by disobeying the Interior Minister and engaging in job racketeering at the same time abusing the powers vested on her. The Minister had nothing to do at the time of her sack than to show her the way out. So the Minister?s action was justified. What happened to the reforms in Prisons Service, Fire Service, Immigration Service and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and even the business and Citizenship department of the Ministry. How many times did the panel of judges of the Thisday rating Committee visited the Interior Ministry to verify what the Minister has achieved within his inception of office as Minister of the Federal Republic.
?An outsider who refused to inquire about what is happening inside a house cannot explain what is inside the house. In this era of freedom of information practice, media organizations like Thisday must learn to do what is right, when and how. Therefore, we condemn the Thisday rating of the Interior Minister, Patrick Abba Moro as poor going by the method and modality used and applied. Sentiments should not be used for public interest?.
