….Sued for ‘swindling’ Businessman

Wife of Rashid Bawa, Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Hajia Mariam Issah Bawa, has been dragged to the Accra Commercial court to show- cause why she should not be sanctioned with appropriate fines and punishment for allegedly ‘swindling’ a Switzerland based Ghanaian to the tune 23,000 Swiss Franc.

Gyando Asmah and Co. solicitors for the plaintiff, Benjamin Budu Larbi , are contending that the defendant who holds herself out as a business woman with several business interests including the ownership of Mariston International , a general trading company , sometime in 2013 approached their client for a loan of 23,000 Swiss Franc, to enable her complete an oil transaction she claimed was at the time engaged in, but efforts by their client to retrieve the said monies had proven futile.

‘’The plaintiff agreed to lend the money to the defendant and a loan agreement was entered into on the 3rd of April 2013 for that amount of money. The loan was to be paid back to him on the 10th of June 2013, at which time the amount due with interest would be 27,600 Swiss France’’, they hinted.

Andrew Appau Obeng , one of the lead Lawyers for the plaintiff, in an interview with this reporter explained that apart from the initial loan agreement witnessed by the defendant’s daughter, one Fallila Issah Bawa, the defendant continued to approach their client for several sums of money and was given additional sum of 12,404 Swiss Franc, which in all summed up to 35,474 Swiss Franc .

However, in attempts to ask for his monies back, the defendant on 10th July 2015 issued a 16,000 dollars fake cheque in the name of her Business, Mariston International, bearing the account number- 0175841112035, at the Atlantic Bank (Accra Central Branch)as part payment through his (plaintiff) mother, Elizabeth Ohene , but was dishonored upon presentation to the bank.

Lawyer Obeng further explained that the defendant neglected to pay the balance of the money due him until 4th July 2017 when she paid the sum of 5,000 dollars which was the equivalence of 4,800 Swiss Franc, in the presence of the defendant’s Lawyer, Alex Quaynor of Akuffo /Prempeh and Co. right after a teaser was published in the New Crusading GUIDE Newspaper, with the Headline ‘’HOW AMBASSDOR’S WIFE SWINDLED SWITZERLAND -BASED GHANAIAN, CHAPTER AND VERSE DETAILS EMERGE’’.

The lawyers are however praying the court for the recovery of the sum of 35,474 Swiss Franc or Cedi equivalent at the prevailing rate of exchange, and with interest at the contractual rate of 20 percent from July 2013 till the date of final payment.
Stay tuned.
