Prof Aryeetey said the decision has affected academic work at the University, as retired employees cannot be replaced until the ban is lifted.

Delivering a speech at the University’s graduation ceremony on Saturday, Prof Aryeetey entreated the Government to address the situation so the school can get some respite.

The “University management has been forced to put a temporary freeze on all employments, until such a time that the University receives financial clearance from Government to appoint new staff.

“In this regard, even though some employees retired at the end of the last academic year, no new appointments are being made that will require such payments by Government. This problem has become a major obstacle for the development of academic programmes,” he lamented.

In a bid to control Ghana’s public sector wage bill, the Government, in 2010, temporarily froze public sector employment. In March this year, Finance Minister Seth Tekper hinted at a lift of the ban. He said fresh recruitment will start once the fortunes of the economy improved.
