A Cote d’Ivoire opposition alliance calling itself National Coalition for Change (CNC) on Sunday called for the dissolution of the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) which it accused of “partiality.” Ivory Coast
“CEI cannot be allowed to continue operating in its current form because it exhibits partiality which threatens the transparency of the forthcoming elections. This commission does not inspire any confidence in us,” CNC spokesman Laurent Akoun said when he addressed the media in Abidjan.
The opposition has proposed the formation of an electoral commission that is comprised of permanent members chosen from among credible personalities who do not have any political affiliation.
At the same time, CNC has threatened to organize public protests in Abidjan in the coming days to push the government to discuss with the opposition about the conditions for organizing the forthcoming presidential elections.
“CNC has decided to hold the meetings to force the government to talk about the ideal conditions for holding fair elections to avert another crisis in Cote d’Ivoire,” Akoun said.
Cote d’Ivoire is preparing to hold its presidential elections in October. The elections are expected to restore normalcy in the country after the deadly 2010-2011 post-election violence. Enditem
