The Minister of State (Regional Administration and Special Department), Mr Haji Omar Kheri, announced that President Shein had endorsed the new structure of boundaries aimed at addressing the increasing population, particularly provisions of social services.

?We were about 300,000 in 1967, but in 2012 the population was 1.3 million. At this time it is estimated that we are more than 1.4 million people.

This prompts the government to review the boundaries,? said Mr Kheri. He said that after the review exercise, Zanzibar will have five administrative regions, but with 11 districts up from ten after the highly populated West District was split into two: West A district and West B district.

The number of Council- Wards is now 111 from 141, while the Community- Wards (popularly known as Shehia) have been increased from 331 to 384 with 255 on Unguja Islands.

The announcement of new structure in the Islands paves the way for the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) to reveal its findings on constituency boundaries of the current 50 constituencies of Unguja and Pemba.

ZEC authorities have several times postponed announcing the results of the review of the constituency boundaries, saying they would not do so before the government?s declaration on reviewed districts and regional boundaries.
