President Nana Akufo-Addo Congratulates DRC’s new leader

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has congratulated Felix Tshisekedi on his election and subsequent assumption of office as president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the presidency said here on Monday.

In a letter sent to Tshisekedi, Akufo-Addo said he welcomed the historic and peaceful transition of political power in the DRC.

He assured the new DRC leader of Ghana’s readiness to collaborate with his country during this period of transition and to deepen the common values of democracy, good governance and respect for fundamental human rights.

Akufo-Addo also assured Tshisekedi of his commitment to strengthening the warm and friendly relations between the two countries and peoples.

According to the DRC constitutional court, Tshisekedi, who was the candidate for the Union for Democracy and Social Progress, won the Dec. 30 election with more than 38.5 percent of the votes while his close rival Martin Fayulu, another opposition candidate, garnered around 28 percent.

They were followed by Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, a candidate for the ruling coalition. Enditem
