Buhari, a son of Daura in north eastern state of Katsina was born on December 17, 1942, to his father Adamu and mother, Zulaihat.
His first stint as political leader was between December 31, 1983 and August 27, 1985 when he served as Nigeria’s Head of State after overthrowing the government of President Shehu Shagari in a coup.
Buhari was in turn overthrown in a coup led by General Ibrahim Babangida in 1985.
The rather ‘restless’ politician went on to contest the 2003, 2007 and 2011 presidential elections as a civilian but was defeated each time. Once against the Late Yar’ Adua in 2007, against Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003 and the immediate past Goodluck Jonathan in 2011.
He won the March 28, 2015 polls against Jonathan to become Nigeria’s president President, and also the first person to unseat an incumbent Nigerian president in democratic elections.
