Nigerian police said on Tuesday an investigation is underway to apprehend the killers of a police sergeant who was shot dead while on guard in the country’s oil-rich state of Bayelsa.

The sergeant was shot dead by suspected gunmen in front of a police station in Sagbama district of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, late Sunday, Asinim Butswat, a police spokesman confirmed to reporters.

The spokesman said a manhunt for the killers had commenced and the rifle of the deceased policeman had been recovered.

The gunmen rode on an unregistered motorcycle, he noted, saying the police were working “to establish the motive behind the dastardly act because they didn’t stop, they shot at the policeman and zoomed off.”

Butswat said the two gunmen escaped before policemen at the station could recover from the confusion triggered by the unexpected attack. Enditem
