At least five robbery suspects were killed Saturday in an exchange of gunfire with police in northwestern Tanzania’s region of Shinyanga, local authorities said on Sunday.

The suspects were allegedly found with guns and bombs believed to be set for use in banditry incidents in various parts of the district, including mining areas, according to Shinyanga regional police commander Simon Haule.

“Our preliminary investigation shows that the suspects were among those who we believe carried out serious criminal activity in Tanga region, Kibiti district (Coast region), and Dar es Salaam resulting in the murders of police officers, government leaders, and citizens,” Haule said.

He called on members of the public in the region to keep cooperating with police by notifying and updating them whenever suspicious people are spotted in their vicinities. Enditem
