Witnesses told Xinhua that the incident happened at about 12:15 (10:15 GMT) on a funeral escort made up by four cars.

“Police had received information according to which people who were going to bury theirs were criminals and that they had arms with a plan to attack policemen positioned along the road on their way back from the burial ceremony,” said Nkurikiye.

According to him, police agents intercepted the four suspected vehicles on their way back from Mpanda cemetery in order to check arms and to arrest the criminals.

“When police agents requested drivers of the four cars to stop, one of the bus occupants opened fire against police agents and anther one attempted to detonate a grenade, but police agents shot him dead before he could detonate the grenade. During the operation, 12 criminals were arrested and two guns and one grenade were seized,” said Nkurikiye.

However, said Nkurikiye, two vehicles managed to escape without being searched.

He added that the incident happened when criminals were coming from burying one of the chief criminals who was killed in an attack against the Kamenge Youths’ Center in the capital Bujumbura on Tuesday.
