North Eastern Regional Coordinator Mohamud Saleh said two policemen were killed and two others were injured when the suspected insurgents from the Al-Shabaab attacked a police vehicle.

“They were traveling from Lafey to El Wak when their vehicle was hit by a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG). The deceased include the Lafey Officer Commanding Police Station (OCS),” Saleh said.

The attack came hours after the Police launched a man-hunt for some gunmen who escaped the scene of an attempted attack against the Kenyan security forces.

One militant was killed and five others were arrested Saturday when the police drove into the scene where the militants believed to be supporters of the Al-Shabaab, were planting an improvised explosive along the road.
Saleh said the vehicle on which the policemen were traveling was burnt while the attackers escaped.

Police said a major operation has been launched in the area to arrest those suspected of carrying out the attack targeting the Police vehicle.

Police Inspector-General Joseph Boinnet warned of plans by a breakaway faction of the Al-Shabaab which has pledged loyalty to the Islamic State of Iraq (ISIL) to escalate attacks as a way of gaining international recognition.

This month, the pro-ISIL group has carried out six attacks in Lafey and El Wak, among them, an attempt to shoot dead passengers traveling in a bus in El Wak.

Police believe the Al-Shabaab faction operating in the region is made of 100 fighters. Enditem
