Election Violence: IGP orders prosecution of arrested suspects

The inspector-general of Police, Suleiman Abba, has ordered the immediate prosecution of all the suspects arrested during violence that erupted in recent political campaign rallies. Suleiman gave the order yesterday in a statement by Force?spokesman,?CP?Emmanuel?Ojukwu?in which the?IGP?said all the suspects would be?prosecuted irrespective of their status in the society. The police boss advised politicians to play the game by the rules, saying that the Nigeria Police would not condone any act of hooliganism from any quarter.

?It would be recalled that?IGP?Suleiman Abba had earlier directed Zonal?AIGs?and state commissioners of police to crack down on political thugs and miscreants perpetrating mayhem and causing untold discomfort to supporters and actors of opposing political parties in the ongoing political campaigns.

?Some suspects have been arrested in connection with perpetration of violence during political campaigns at different locations contrary to section 227 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) and sections 94 and 95 of the Electoral Act.
