The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has deployed officers from the action units of the service in Accra to Bimbilla to help restore peace and order following clashes that led to an emergency curfew in the area.
Heavy gunfire erupted on Thursday between two factions of same chieftaincy gate (Gbrumayili gate) in the Nanung Traditional Area which resulted in 10 deaths and 8 injured.The Dasana and Dawuni factions engaged in a gun battle after the contentious Regent of the town installed a subchief.The regent allegedly disregarded security warnings and went ahead with the ceremony sparking the relaxed chieftaincy dispute.
17 individuals have so far been rounded up by police and military forces.
In a statement issued by the Director/Public Affairs, Superintendent Cephas Arthur, it said ‘the reinforcement team is made up of personnel from the action units of the Service, and Crime Scene Management Unit at the CID Headquarters, Accra’.
“The re-inforcement has the mandate of consolidating the calm that has been restored to the area, and also investigating the disturbances that broke out”, it said.
