It has emerged that the young man who was killed by the police for trying to stop a demolition exercise being carried out on the aviation lands located at Adenta in Accra was not a land guard as reported.
This was revealed by the family of the deceased, Adjei Akpor, calling on the police to come out and apologize for mistakenly shooting him and also describing him as a land guard.
According to the family, the deceased, 29, was a commercial driver, married with two children, stating that he was a harmless person in the society and very generous.
The mother of the deceased, Mame Adjorkor told DAILY GUIDE, ?I am very sad and it hurts me a lot to hear the police branding my son as a land guard. He was not a land guard and I want the police to come out and apologize.?
The mother who was shedding tears while speaking said, ?I am now a helpless woman who does not have anybody to take care of me anymore since my only son is dead.
?I have been suffering from stroke for five years and he takes care of my needs. In fact, he was the bread winner of the family and now that he is dead, who will take care of me??
The cousin of the deceased, Nii Adjei Emmanuel Odarmitey who narrated what transpired on the aviation land to DAILY GUIDE on Monday said about 12 angry youth in the community, including the deceased went on the land to register their displeasure about the demolition which was being supervised by 60 armed police personnel from the SWAT Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
He said when they got there; the police had already surrounded the place and began to shoot into the air to deter them from interfering with the demolition.
According to him, they were not perturbed by the warning shots as they stood there watching what was going on.
?When the police realized we were not moving, they started shooting on the ground and subsequently one of the bullets hit the leg of the deceased and he fell down and another bullet also hit his head while he was lying on the ground killing him instantly.
?This is what happened. We were not holding guns or machetes as the police were saying. We were armless youth who went there to register our displeasure about the demolition exercise and nothing more.?
?What the police are saying are all lies, they should just come out and apologize and we will forgive them. Of course mistakes do happen and we know they did not intentionally shoot him because we were there and saw what happened.?
