Pet monkeys are facing an obesity epidemic because of their ?couch potato? lifestyle and owners feeding them fatty foods.

Animal welfare experts have warned more and more primates are overweight because of their diet and lack of exercise.

According to the RSPCA, there are an estimated 7,000 primates kept as pets in the UK.

But welfare groups worry the problem is only getting worse, for monkeys in particular, due mainly to their owners feeding them unsuitable human foods.

Jean Smith, who runs the Yorkshire Monkey Sanctuary, told the Telegraph: ?We have had them too fat to move sometimes. It is just a question of the wrong diet.

?They are fed on things like sweets, pizza, chips and cake ? whatever their owner is eating. And many don?t have enclosures large enough to run it all off.?

The sanctuary has more than 40 monkeys, and around half of them reportedly came in suffering from health problems linked to their lifestyle.

This follows similar warnings for overweight dogs, cats and rabbits
