Dr Sena Kpeglo, Registrar, University of Health and Allied Sciences has called on parents to provide “supportive environment” at home to children to enhance their academic performance at school.

Ms Florence Syevuo, National Coordinator, SDGs Kenya Forum takes notes at the County Dialogue at Misyani Mission, Kangundo Machakos County on Wednesday. Participants expressed fear that the process of implementing the SDGs may leave the vulnerable women, children and persons living with disabilities and older persons out.

“Parents must provide their children with a supportive environment at home; keep watch on their activities and to make links with their teachers so as to make the best out of their education,” she said.

Dr Kpeglo said this at the 30th anniversary celebrations of Dora Memorial International School Complex in Ho on the theme, “Transforming lives with the power of education-Dora Memorial School’s 30 years’ experience.”

She said academic work must not be limited to school environment, and charged parents to devote time for their children and improve their study habits at home.

Dr Kpeglo said homes with ‘supportive learning environment’ encouraged children to go the extra mile in their academics, leading to better future with opportunities.

“Education enhances job opportunities, helping households to escape poverty. By benefitting women in particular, education can help narrow gender gaps in work opportunities and pay,” she stated, linking it to supportive learning environment at home.

Dr Kpeglo called for active collaboration among teachers to gain new teaching ideas and also for a combination of discipline and counselling in their role as substitute parents.

Mr M.A.K Buadi, Volta Regional Director of Education, in a speech read on his behalf asked students to be committed to their studies.

“I urge you all to rise above the temptations of today and be obedient to authority and to be committed to your studies. This is the opportunity to learn and to form the foundations for your future,” he said.

Mr Buadi said the Ghana Education Service (GES) in its quest for the appropriate education of persons for the socio-economic and political transformation of Ghana has a vision of making quality education accessible to all children of school going age.

He said policy interventions such as the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE), the Junior High School Concept, GET-Fund and the Girl-Child Education Unit were geared towards improving quality of education.

Prizes were awarded to outstanding students and staff, including the 82 year old founder and proprietor of the school, Mrs Vida Aku-Sika Tete Dzobo, a retired educationist and a co- founder of Mawuko Girls Senior High School in Ho.
