How A Typical Ghanaian Scholar Should Look Like

The Bishop of Winneba Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana, Right Reverend Dr John Kweku Buaben Odoom has urged parents not to shun their responsibilities towards their children.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Odoom made the call in a sermon on the theme ?Not Seven but Seventy Seven times Seven?, at a thanks giving service held at Ebenezer Methodist Cathedral Winneba, to commemorate the achievement of a Scholarship Scheme for brilliant but needy students of the Connexional Sunday School Ministry of the church.

The day was also used to award seventy students who are members of the Connexional Sunday School from the 16 Dioceses of the church who passed the selection procedure to become beneficiaries of the scheme.

The Bishop said human go through tribulations and that it was only when people learn to rely on the Lord God Almighty that it shall be well with them.

He therefore advised the new beneficiaries of the scholarship to concentrate on their studies to enable them excel, adding that, previous beneficiaries did not abuse the offer.

Madam Janet Nana Thompson, Director of the Children?s Ministry Directorate of Methodist Church Ghana, giving a brief history of the Scholarship said it was instituted in 2000 through the initiative of the Very Rev. William Edmond Davis of blessed memory when Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Asante Antwi was then the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana.

According to Madam Thompson, from January this year the church has raised 264,000.00 Ghana Cedis towards the scheme, which caters for only children aged between 14 and 21 years who were members of the Church.

She said currently the church was sponsoring about 150 students and almost 800 students have so far benefited from the scheme.

Madam Thompson stated further that many of the beneficiaries have gained admission to the Universities, Colleges of Education and other Institutions of higher learning, with some having graduated and were gainfully employed.
