The Eastern Regional Girls’ Education Officer, Mrs. Cynthia Anim, has called for parents take advantage of the fee-free senior high school (SHS) policy to get the girl child to pursue academic careers.

That, she said, was the way forward to empower, lift them out of poverty and make their lives meaningful to the society.

She added that keeping girls in school was vital to help them to escape early child marriage and teenage pregnancy.

She was speaking at a durbar held at Akode in the Akuapem North District to celebrate this year’s international day of the girl.

“The power of the adolescent girl: vision 2030” was the theme chosen for the event, organized by “The Hunger Project-Ghana” under, what it calls “her choice project”, which has been designed to empower young girls.

Mrs. Anim spoke of the need to do more to tear down barriers to their development – child marriage, inadequate encouragement both at home and in school, sexual abuse, teenage pregnancy, violence against the child, child prostitution and labor and parental neglect.

Mr. Samuel Afrane, Country Director, ‘The Hunger Project-Ghana’, urged parents to focus priority on girls’ education.

He underlined the determination of his organization to assist provide strong support and protection for girls to aid them to live their dreams.

They should be given equal opportunities as their male counterparts to fully exploit their potentials.
