The Mozambican National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) on Wednesday burnt in Maputo over half a ton of different illicit drugs, as part of the efforts to combat trafficking, sale and consumption of drugs and other substances prohibited by the law.

According to Rainha Gamboa, SERNIC director in Maputo, the drugs, including plenty of heroin and cocaine, were seized between June 2018 and October 2019 in various parts of Maputo, notably the international airport, where drug carriers have frequently been caught with drugs hidden in their luggage or inside their bodies.

“There were about 319 defendants, of whom 286 are Mozambican nationals and 33 foreign nationals,” said Gamboa, adding that “most of the foreign nationals involved in the acts are individuals from the African, European and American continents.” Enditem
