South African giants Orlando Pirates are stepping-up their pursuit for Ghanaian Mohammed Awal following news that arch rivals Kaizer Chiefs have slapped in an offer for the defender.

Soccer-Laduma has reported that Pirates have joined the race following Thursday?s news that Maritzburg United have informed Mohammed Awal of an offer from Chiefs.

The media in South Africa reported that The Team of Choice are currently studying the offer for the 25-year-old that was submitted by the Glamour Boys earlier in the week and it seems that the news may spur their Soweto rivals into action.

There has been much speculation surrounding the Ghanaian defender in recent weeks, with Pirates thought to be leading the race for his signature.

However, the latest news suggests that Chiefs could now been in the driving seat, despite the fact that Pirates are still keen to add him to their squad ahead of the new season.

Awal does have a long-term contract in place with the Pietermaritzburg-based outfit, however with Pirates, Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns all keen on his signature, Maritzburg could well cash in on the defender at the end of the season.
