One killed, 15 injured in Nairobi church grenade attack

One person died and 15 were injured when a grenade was hurled into a church congregation in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Sunday, the Kenya Red Cross said.

The Red Cross said an assailant, believed to be a member of the congregation, threw a grenade into the crowd at the House of God Miracle church. Five people were in critical condition, it said. There has been a spate of deadly grenade attacks in Kenya since Nairobi in September sent troops into neighbouring Somalia to target militant Islamist group al-Shabaab.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack. Al-Shabaab called for attacks in Kenya after the military incursion, which was sparked by a series of kidnappings of foreigners from Kenyan soil. Kenya blamed al-Shabaab, which has been on the back foot in recent months following a five-year insurgency aimed at ousting the internationally backed government.

Embassies and security staff last week warned that a major terror attack targeting government of Kenya buildings and hotels was in the final stages of planning.
