The rag-tagged galamsey operators had no personnel protection equipment,?no safety attire, no goggles ?and were just using crude implements to?dig into the rocks when they were arrested. They are ?Kofi Akadom,?Kwabena Opoku, Sumaila Mohammed, Opong Eric, Kofi Amawu, ?Seidu Subor,?Atungo Toby and ?Agyin Dele. They current on remand at the Obuasi?Municipal Police Station.

The Municipal police authorities, who in recent times have been accused?of going soft on galamseyers ?are handling the case. They have confirmed?the ?arrest of the illegal miners saying “they will be put before court?soon ?after further investigation”.

“The police has a major role to play, so are the judges in the?municipality if we want to stop illegal mining from interfering in our?freedom. It is the ?responsibility of the police to ensure courageous?and fair prosecution of illegal miners and it is the responsibility ?of?the judges and magistrates to ensure appropriate sentences are meted out?to illegal miners found ?guilty”, Zac ?Annani, ?a private security?analyst and a social commentator ?in Obuasi suggested.
