Former United States President Barack Obama issued a clarification Sunday after a podcast interview in which he appeared to confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life sparked widespread online speculation about government knowledge of aliens.

Obama addressed the reaction in an Instagram post published Sunday, February 15, 2026, explaining that his Saturday comments were made in the spirit of a rapid fire question segment and required additional context. The clarification followed intense social media discussion of a brief exchange during his appearance on Brian Tyler Cohen’s No Lie podcast.

During the Saturday interview, Cohen asked Obama directly whether aliens are real. Obama responded by saying they are real but added he had not seen them personally. He dismissed conspiracy theories about Area 51, the highly classified United States Air Force installation in Nevada, stating there is no underground facility housing aliens unless there exists an enormous conspiracy that was hidden from the president of the United States.

The comment quickly went viral across social media platforms, with users interpreting the statement as confirmation that the government possesses knowledge of extraterrestrial life. Obama’s Sunday clarification sought to reframe his remarks in statistical rather than confirmatory terms.

In his Instagram statement, Obama wrote that statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there is life out there. However, he emphasized that the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances Earth has been visited by aliens is low. Obama stated he saw no evidence during his presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with humans.

The former president added a final emphasis to his clarification by writing the word really to underscore his point about the absence of evidence.

During the podcast interview, Cohen also asked Obama what question he most wanted answered when he became president. Obama replied with laughter that he wanted to know where the aliens are, suggesting the topic was among his initial curiosities upon taking office in January 2009.

This was not the first time Obama has addressed questions about extraterrestrial life. During a 2015 appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Obama stated that when it comes to aliens, there are some things he could not reveal on air. He later clarified that while there is no confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial contact, the United States government does have records of unexplained aerial objects.

Area 51, officially known as Groom Lake or Homey Airport, has operated since 1955 as a Military Operating Area. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) only publicly acknowledged the facility’s existence in 2013 through declassified documents, though it has long been the subject of conspiracy theories suggesting the government is secretly housing and studying alien technology.

The base covers approximately 8,000 square miles in the Nevada desert and has served as a testing ground for classified aircraft including the U2 spy plane in the 1950s and later the B2 stealth bomber. In 1995, President Bill Clinton signed an executive order exempting the site from certain environmental disclosure requirements, citing national security concerns.

Interest in unidentified aerial phenomena has increased in recent years following the United States government’s release of a public report on what it officially terms Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP). The nine page unclassified document, released in June 2021, reviewed 120 incidents recorded by United States military and government personnel between 2004 and 2021. The report acknowledged that some sightings remain unexplained.

In September 2025, the House Oversight and Government Reform Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets heard testimony from military veterans describing mysterious unidentified aerial phenomena. Air Force veteran Dylan Borland testified that a triangular aircraft hovered above him for several minutes at Langley Air Force Base in 2012, displaying characteristics that defied conventional aviation physics. Borland stated the craft interfered with his telephone, produced no sound, and appeared to be made of fluid or dynamic material.

Representative Anna Paulina Luna, who chairs the task force, has stated that based on evidence she has reviewed, she is confident there are things that have not been created by mankind, suggesting the possibility of interdimensional beings.

Former President Donald Trump addressed the topic during a 2019 interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson. When asked whether he believed in unidentified flying objects (UFOs), Trump stated he doubted it personally but acknowledged that pilots have reported seeing things. Trump said he was not a believer but conceded anything is possible.

Former President Bill Clinton told Jimmy Kimmel in 2014 that after becoming president, he had his aides research Area 51. Clinton stated it is unlikely that humans are alone in the universe but did not confirm any evidence of alien contact.

Despite persistent speculation and congressional hearings on unidentified aerial phenomena, no official evidence has confirmed the existence of extraterrestrial life or secret alien facilities. Obama’s Instagram clarification appeared aimed at distinguishing between the statistical probability of life existing somewhere in the universe and claims of actual contact with Earth.

The former president’s comments arrived as documentary director Dan Farah alleged a major government cover up of non human intelligence. Farah stated he believes it is only a matter of time before a sitting president steps to a podium and tells the world that humans are not alone in the universe. Trump has not publicly confirmed the existence of extraterrestrial life, though he has acknowledged hearing reports of unusual aerial phenomena.
