The National Council of the Ghana Registered Nurses Association will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow over comments by Health Minister Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin that Pharmacists must be placed higher than nurses on the Single Spine pay policy.

Mr. Alban Bagbin said the nurses are currently at level 18, same as the government pharmacists on the spine but he believes that pharmacists who are currently on strike deserve a higher grade.

Speaking on Adom FM?s Dwaso Nsem morning show on Monday September 10, 2012, the President of the Ghana Registered Nurses Association, Mr. Kwaku Asante-Krobea said members of the Association are disappointed and dismayed by the Minister?s comments and but for the swift intervention of the national executive, the nurses would have embarked on a strike action.

Pointing out that nurses were the only organized body not to have embarked on a strike over the anomalies in the single spine pay policy, Mr Krobea said perhaps the powers-that-be had taken their calmness as a sign of weakness.

Mr. Asante Krobea added that the educational background and qualification of nurses cannot be lower than that of the Pharmacists, adding, even the population of the nurses alone in the health sector is enough to collapse the sector in the event of a strike.

In any event, the Nurses? chief said, Mr Bagbin?s words were regrettable, sounding like the ?beginning of the fall of a mighty man I respect so much.?

The national council will decide on the minister?s comment after the emergency meeting.
Attempts to reach the Minister of Health proved futile.
