Statistics obtained by Xinhua from the Namibia Statistics Agency Monday show that 52.8 percent of these children are girls.


According to the 2011 census, there are more than 956, 600 children in Namibia out of a population of 2.3 million.

The statistics show that 91, 309 of orphans and vulnerable children are in the northern regions of country.
Other high figures are in the north-west of the country where the two Kavango regions have a combined 17, 743 and Kunene with 14,553.

Namibia has three types of grants given to orphans and vulnerable children. These are the maintenance grant, foster parent grant and special maintenance grant.

In 2014, 128, 657 orphans and vulnerable children received maintenance grant. This figure is higher than the 120, 156 who received the same grant in 2011.

Even the number of children who received foster grants in 2014 rose from 19, 618 in 2011 to 20, 297. Those who received special grants last year were 4, 791 as compared to 5,626 in 2011.

In 2013, the Namibian cabinet directed the gender ministry to create a data base of orphans and vulnerable children to improve coordination and planning.

The data base includes information such as children-mapping, inventory and analysis on different types of services. Enditem.
