New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Justin Kodua has raised alarms over deepening internal divisions within the opposition party, cautioning that factionalism threatens its cohesion ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Kodua lamented the erosion of issue-based discourse as members increasingly prioritize factional loyalties over substantive debate.
“The party has reached a point where analysis gives way to camp politics,” Kodua stated, referencing growing tensions between factions aligned with potential flagbearer candidates. He specifically criticized aspiring leaders who “undermine current structures while seeking to inherit them,” emphasizing that such conduct weakens the party’s foundation.
The comments come amid heightened internal maneuvering following the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat. With former President Akufo-Addo ineligible to run and former Vice President Bawumia’s political future uncertain, at least five factions have emerged advocating different leadership directions. Political analysts note the NPP faces an existential challenge in rebuilding while the ruling NDC consolidates gains under President Mahama.
Kodua urged discipline, warning that continued infighting could jeopardize the party’s ability to present a united front. His remarks signal growing concern within the NPP hierarchy about balancing internal democracy with strategic unity as Ghana’s political landscape evolves.
