Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Justin Kodua stated the winner of its 2026 presidential primaries must avoid hand-picking party leaders.
He emphasized such exclusionary tactics would jeopardize victory in the 2028 general election. Kodua made these remarks during an interview on Accra-based Net2 Television.
He argued unifying all factions remains essential for electoral success. According to Kodua, sidelining members based on loyalty to any flagbearer alienates their supporters and weakens the party. He noted internal divisions currently hinder effective scrutiny of the ruling National Democratic Congress government.
Kodua affirmed party communications will strengthen after the primaries conclude on January 31, 2026. He declared the early primary schedule aims to provide ample preparation time, not favor specific candidates. The General Secretary urged national and regional officers to maintain strict neutrality during the contest.
He cautioned officers that openly backing any aspirant risks post-primary disunity if their preferred candidate loses. Kodua reiterated internal cohesion is critical before challenging President John Mahama’s administration.
