New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua has launched a sharp critique against the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, alleging its tenure has triggered an “unprecedented” surge in illegal mining (galamsey) devastating Ghana’s environment.

At a Tuesday press conference in Accra, Kodua asserted that NDC officials and members are actively participating in the destruction of forests and rivers.

“What we’re witnessing in the last six months is unparalleled,” Kodua stated, claiming NDC-linked individuals “freely enter forest reserves and water bodies to engage in galamsey with impunity.” He accused the administration of failing to curb environmentally destructive activities that intensified since the NDC took office in January 2025.

The remarks escalate political tensions amid ongoing environmental crises, including pollution of critical water sources like the Pra and Ankobra rivers. Kodua’s allegations implicitly challenge President Mahama’s commitment to environmental protection—a key pledge during his 2024 campaign.

Backdrop:

  • The NDC previously criticized the NPP’s galamsey record while in opposition

  • Current Minerals Commission data shows 40% of small-scale mining remains unlicensed

  • Recent INTERPOL-Ghana Police operations seized 300 excavators from illegal sites

The NDC has yet to respond publicly. Environmental groups urge bipartisan action, noting Ghana lost 29% of forest cover since 2000 largely due to illegal mining.
