Nottingham Forest owner Nigel Doughty has been found dead in the gym at his Lincolnshire house aged just 54, in an incident that has shocked the club.

A statement from the club reads: “It is with enormous sadness that Nottingham Forest announce the death of the club’s owner Nigel Doughty.

“Mr Doughty, who was 54, was found dead earlier today in his gym at his home in Skillington, Lincolnshire.

“The club would like to appeal for the privacy of Mr Doughty’s family to be observed at this sad time.

“The club will be making no further comment.”

Doughty was a lifelong Forest fan and used his millions to save the club from administration when he bought them in 1999 for £11 million. Since then he has invested nearly £100m of his personal fortune.

He had been chairman of the Reds 10 ten years too, but stepped down in October after the sacking of Steve McClaren.

Forest are currently second-bottom in the Championship and are due to face Derby at Pride Park on Sunday.
