The Police yesterday gunned down a suspected armed robber following a shootout at Abeka Lapaz in Accra.

His two accomplices were, however, arrested after they had allegedly stolen a taxi from its owner.

The deceased was identified only as Grant, alias Francis. Grant and his accomplices, Yaw Dormekpor, 32, and Desmond Bimpeh, 22, are said to have snatched a taxi, with registration number GC 4728-12, from its owner in Tema.

A fourth suspect is said to have bolted upon seeing the police patrol team.

At a press briefing in Accra yesterday, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the two suspects were arrested at Abofu, near Achimota.

According to him, after the suspects had snatched the taxi, they drove to a drinking spot at Achimota.

Mr Yohuno said the police, acting on intelligence, traced the hideout of the two suspects and subsequently arrested them.

He said Grant and the other suspect at large managed to escape to Abeka Lapaz, where the police pursued them.

Immediately the police spotted the two, Mr Yohuno said, Grant opened fire on the police, to which the police responded in equal measure, resulting in Grant being hit by a bullet.

He said Grant died on the way to the Police Hospital.

Mr Yohuno said investigations revealed that Dormekpor had just been released from prison after serving a 10-year sentence for robbery, while Grant was released under the ?Justice for All Programme?.
